Youth Rights

NJP represents foster youth in active Child in Need of Aid (CINA) cases and also brings suit for past wrongs enacted against former foster youth. We pride ourselves on a client-centered approach that helps a youth in all aspects of their lives, whether it's inside the courtroom or out.

NJP is currently representing a class of foster youth who are Social Security recipients and is trying to put an end to OCS's practice of automatically taking all Social Security benefits for “self-reimbursement.” In 2019, the Superior Court held in that case that OCS's practice of taking Social Security benefits without notice violated the foster youths' due process rights. See State of Alaska v. Z.C.

NJP has also represented individual foster youth in cases against North Star Behavioral Health System for inappropriate treatment, including the nonconsensual use of psychotropic drugs.
