Government Benefits

NJP is committed to ensuring that Alaskans have access to public benefits and healthcare. This has included engaging in statewide lawsuits to ensure that the government provides the services and benefits that Alaskans deserve.

For instance, in 2019, when thousands of Alaskans were left without healthcare because the state was failing to process Medicaid applications on time, NJP filed a class action lawsuit led to a favorable settlement that forced the state to eliminate the application backlog. Spencer et al., v. Crum et al., No. 3:19-cv-00087-SLG. This.

In 2019, when the state was denying Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming healthcare, NJP filed Being et al., v. Crum et al., No. 3:19-cv-00060-HRH. This class action lawsuit led to a favorable settlement that forced the state to provide this healthcare, which can be life saving for transgender people. NJP litigated this case in partnership with Lambda Legal and Perkins Coie.
